Weather
Austrian continental climate consists of hot summers and cold, snowy winters. The Alpine landscape near Vienna can still be snowed over in April, especially on the mountain tops. The best time to walk this area is between late April and the end of October. In the summer months it can get quite hot but again, it will be cooler up in the mountains. Summer thunderstorms are quite common, as well as spells of mist that can hinder visibility and orientation. May, June and September are generally good months to take advantage of the cooler, but pleasant weather. As anywhere else in Central Europe you need to be ready for rain at any time, so do bring weatherproof clothes. Especially in the mountains the weather can change rapidly and one has to watch the weather forcast for each day.
Time to go
The most popular time for walking in the Alps are the summer months, and that’s when you will encounter the most walkers on the trails. May and September are generally the months when the trails are more empty and the weather is pleasant.
